Sukekiyo: Mesmerising, unique and iconic.

As a long-time fan of the inimitable metal band DIR EN GREY, I was beyond excited upon receiving the news that Kyo, the vocalist and lyricist of the group, was forming what would turn out to be Sukekiyo. The enigmatic frontman being in a new group was exciting and the anticipation only grew as more news about the new group emerged. Kyo would be joined by talented performers such as Takumi, an excellent guitarist and former member of the criminally underappreciated Rentrer en Soi. Takumi's former band mate Mika would join as Sukekiyo's drummer. Along with Takumi and Mika, Uta, another talented guitarist from another great group 9Goats Black Out as well as Rayarch beforehand and Yuchi, an excellent bassist from the fantastic band Kannivalism made Sukekiyo a supergroup. The name of the group derives from the novel The Inugami Clan by Seishi Yokomizo.

They officially debuted as the opening act of Sugizo's live show at SHIBUYA-AX on December 29th, 2013. Ever since that date, they've been actively creating wonderful pieces of music whenever Kyo's main focus, DIR EN GREY allows him time. Now, from their first EP release back in 2013, they have made it perfectly clear that they are nothing like DIR EN GREY or any other group for that matter. They have such a unique style that it makes it hard to actively attach a label to their unique sound. The best that I could attempt to describe them as is either alternative or experimental. At times, they are simply dark yet wonderous, mesmerising and captivating.

One of the stand out things about this group is Kyo. I'm a huge fan of his vocals, his delivery and his harmonies. The man has such a wide vocal range, he constantly surprises everyone in almost every new release or live performance and puts so much emotion into his work that it transcends the language barriers. Compare his soft, tender crooning melodious performance in songs such as Aftermath to his raw, powerful, commanding tone in songs such as Zephyr, or his growling in Daemon's Cutlery. Combine all of his pure talent with his stage presence in live performances and his willingness to stand out on stage via wearing such things as nun-like attire, strange yet appropriate headwear and clothing. He also makes use of dance and expression to really pull you in.

Complimenting Kyo's gifted vocals and programming, the band as a whole are technically sound. Proficient in a multitude of instruments and not just those previously mentioned, they weave together otherworldly melodies and rhythms that transport you to another plane of existence. Just listen to the instrumentation in any of their work. For a perfect example I harken back to Aftermath once more, as it's a perfect example of what they can do. The expert use of guitar, bass, keyboard and drums lulls you into a soft, lullaby like state. I dare state that it's some of the most artistic stuff I've ever had the pleasure of listening to and watching.

I recommend giving them a shot and also experiencing their sound with the use of headphones. It's godly!
